Biking Back in Time (Kualoa Ranch)
puʻuhonua = refuge

Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000 acre private nature reserve and working cattle ranch on the windward coast and has been the site of over 70 Hollywood movies since the 1950’s, including Jumanji, Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, and TV shows like Hawaii Five-O, Magnum P.I. and LOST. It was once considered one of the most sacred places on the island and was home to ancient kings and chiefs. It now hosts a variety of tours and activities.
Marielle had asked months ago if we could all go to Kualoa Ranch for her birthday, which is a few weeks before mine. When my dear friend Monika also expressed an interest, we deferred our outing until her visit at the end of February 🙂
On a recommendation from a travel podcast Monika turned us onto called “Hawai’i’s Best,” we chose the electric mountain bike tour, which was absolutely the way to go! The bikes are very nice, and you have the freedom to go where you like. There were six of us in the group – Riv and Marielle, Monika and Tom, and me and Troy – along with our guide Keaka, who was excellent. He told us lots of great stories, explained the culture and history, and was super friendly and fun.
