China Walls

China Walls is one of the closest beaches to us. See that tall white building with the red roof across the bay? We live 1/4 mile behind it đ
The public beach is nestled in the corner of the upscale community of Portlock, across from Hawai’i Kai. There is street parking in the neighborhood and the walk to the beach is lovely in itself with all the beautiful landscaping.

China Walls is quite the scene, frequented primarily by younger locals, students, and international visitors. The rocky cliffs and strong waves that crash around the point make it a favorite for the adventurous types who love to jump in. There is a shallow, flatter area for the less adventurous and it’s important to pay attention to the tides here as most injuries occur by hitting bottom too hard.

Troy and I have yet to try out the cliff-jumping, but we do love the spot for the fun atmosphere (ukulele playing, fire dancing, barbecues) and gorgeous sunsets.

More (Spring 2025)
Riv and Kala’i were surfing China Walls when Bob and Sharron visited and we got to see them close-up as the waves came around the bend. This was the first time River had ever seen a shark while surfing (Galapagos shark).
