Hui Nalu Canoe Club

hui nalu = Club (hui) of the Waves (nalu)

At the end of our street lies the beautiful Maunalua Bay, and the halau for the Hui Nalu Canoe Club. Established in 1908 by the great Duke Kahanamoku along with Knute Cottrell and Kenneth Winter, they’re volunteer-led, and community focused. The outrigger canoe club participates in annual regatta events, annual distance seasons, and races across Hawaii and international venues.

Hui Nalu’s vision is to come together as a family who shares and cares. Their mission is to promote and provide educational and personal achievement opportunities that strengthen family, community, and individual relationships.

We joined in late September for offseason paddling and it has quickly become our community.

It’s still the offseason until at least late February, and we paddle Wednesday and Friday evenings, and Sunday mornings. In the evenings, we stay close to shore or cruise around Koko Marina. We get more adventurous on Sunday mornings, going farther into the bay and closer to open ocean. I can’t wait to be out there when we get some whale or dolphin action! In the meantime, I’ll settle for the fabulous sunset views we’re rewarded with after our evening paddles.

We also volunteered and then participated in their biggest fundraiser of the year – the Kaiwi Coast Run along Kalanianaole Highway.

Here’s a video of some of our early paddling.
