Kaneohe Sandbar

one kea = white sand

In early January, our lovely neighbors invited us to join them on a catamaran tour to the Kaneohe Sandbar, which they were going on with their nieces from California. We chose Kaneohe Bay Ocean Sports, which has their own site near the sandbar with a floating platform, SUP boards, and canoes.

It was a bit cloudy that day, and we chose the early afternoon as that was the lowest tide for times convenient to us. The catamaran ride is only about 10 minutes from the marina. They fed us lunch first and provided live music from the band Kealoha. We ended up talking with the lead singer Jesse later on the tour and made a new friend. Terrific guy!

They provide snorkeling gear, too, and they fed the fish when we arrived, which attracted lots of tang, butterfly fish, and parrot fish. Troy and I tried stand-up paddleboarding for a while but it was a little windy so we gave up. We loved standing in the water, enjoying the scenery, doing a little snorkeling, and chatting with people. The view from the sandbar (which is about 1 mile offshore) provides a great perspective of the Ko’olau mountains and Mokapu Peninsula, where the Marine Corps Base Hawai’i (MCBH) is located. River has a friend with access so he’s been surfing on North Beach there once or twice.

Here’s our lovely crew of friends!
